Traverse City is the place that people have always loved for its beautiful scenery and laid back lifestyle. If you’re lucky enough to live in Traverse City, out-of-towners will often remark about your great luck to live in such a beautiful resort town…and they would be right! Traverse City residents are deeply committed to the land that defines this region – to the abundant crops that it sustains and the outdoor recreation that the residents seek.
Beyond the land are the rich and diverse cultural opportunities from the hugely popular, annual Traverse City Film Festival to the renowned Cherry Festival and all of the many festivals and events that extend entertainment to a year-round offering.
Traverse City is also home to the first community college in the state – Northwestern Michigan College. NMC offers a rich and varied offering for young and old and allows area residents to complete certificates, associate degrees as well as bachelor’s degrees all without leaving the area. The University Center offers partnerships with other Michigan universities extending the educational opportunities to masters and Ph.D. programs. NMC is home to one of six maritime academies in the country – the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. It’s not hard to spot the State of Michigan training vessel docked along the harbor front.
Another cultural jewel for the community is the Dennos Museum on the campus of Northwestern Michigan College and located just east of the downtown. The Museum brings art exhibits, concerts and plays of a caliber you would expect to find only in a much larger city.
Traverse City is known as a “foodie” town. That means you’ll have a tough time deciding where to eat among the many quality restaurants or local food trucks. And if shopping is your vice, you’ll have no problem finding a treasure you can’t live without among a charming collection of unique local stores.
Choices for culture and education abound. The Traverse City School system includes just over 150 public and private preschools, elementary schools, middle schools and high school from which to choose. With all these options, Traverse City offers something for everyone and a great place to raise a family or settle into active retirement.
